Blogging can be fun. Especially on a subject that you are passionate about. Blogging can also be extremely rewarding. Especially if you are an SEO or are interested in SEO in any way. We’ve discussed many times on this blog the important role blogging plays in Search Engine Optimization. But let’s take that conversation to another level. Quality Blogging! Writing good, solid, quality articles that are informative and interesting to your readership and potential readership. It sounds easy to do, but not always. I will spend days brainstorming topic after topic and writing post after post before one “strikes gold”. But let me share with you an example of what happens when a blog post “strikes gold”!

ChaseSagum.com - Open Source Blog

Chasesagum.com is my blog where I write about Open Source technologies for small businesses. I am a huge open source advocate and contributor and enjoy writing about open source applications that benefit the small business. One morning (at 2:00am to be precise) while working on a development project and came across an idea for a blog post in my mind. The idea was this…..“Open Source Saved Me $100,000!” - a blog article about the money I have saved in my small business due to open source technologies, what those technologies are, and how I used them specifically.

I struck a bloggers gold mine! The first day I posted the article, that one article received over 650 page views according to my analytics software. The next day, it received over 1,300 page views! The day after that, over 2,000 page views! All because of one article, my blog had increased it’s daily traffic by more than 30% and is seeing sustainable growth because of the quality of the rest of my articles. What’s the lesson to be learned here?

Lesson Learned

Spend the time to brainstorm, research, and write good quality blog articles. Spend less time just putting together quick articles just for fillers! By spending the time and research it takes to pump out quality blog articles, it’s only a matter of time before you start hitting the amounts of traffic like my example above. Remember, that blog article is only one article of over 500 total on Chasesagum.com. So you can probably estimate in your mind the traffic amounts I am receiving on my blog altogether. Here are some key elements behind my success with the article described above:

  1. Brainstorming - I spent nearly over 3 hours brainstorming the topic
  2. Research & Investigation - I spent another full hour putting together the numbers and the research to prove my valid points
  3. Writing - this was the quickest of all. The article only actually took me 10 minutes to put together and format how I wanted on the blog.
  4. Social Media Submission - I spent another 5 minutes and quickly submitted my article to Digg.com, Reddit.com, and saved my article on StumbleUpon

Where do I attribute most of those 6,000 unique page views too? The first two elements mentioned! Brainstorming and Research and investigation. So the next time you go to write a blog article, put a little more thought and effort into it. It’s only a matter of time before it pays off!
