Another one of my blogs (my most popular one) Chasesagum.com where I write about open source tools for businesses has some very intriguing truths to tell through web analytics. From January 3 through February 2 of this year, my statistics show me that Google is responsible for 98% of all traffic from search engines. Wow! Here are the actual numbers:
Google - 1,126 visits
Yahoo - 6 visits
AOL - 4 visits
altavista - 1 visit
MSN - 1 visit
There are some interesting facts about this website that you should know. #1 is that it is a blog, so content is being updated often. #2, the blogging platform that I am using is Wordpress along with a couple SEO plugins to go with it. #3 is that I am using a shared hosting provider Bluehost, and I am on a shared account using a shared IP address. #4, my domain name is 1 year old. #5, I have never paid for any type of PPC with any search engine. #6, each post has a well written and detailed title and page title. #7, I utilize “nofollow” often to prevent the passing on of “link juice”. And finally #7, I write about open source software.
I present these facts to you simply for your study and experimentation. I must tell you that with all the talk of Google being “65%” of the search engine market in the United States I find my numbers SHOCKING! 98%! I am basically getting nothing from the other search engines. Is anybody really using them? Or is everybody using Google? Am I just one of a few people who are experiencing this level of inbalance?
The facts above may help you and I to understand the reasons for this. My thinking is that first, the other search engines are not advanced enough to really benefit well written blogs. And second, searchers who are interested in open source software are primarily “linux” people who of course use Google rather than any other search engine. Any of your feedback would be appreciated.
